“I have never felt so powerful & liberated and so f*cking proud of my stretch marks in my entire life!! Where I come from and live, to be on the chubby side or, to even talk about stretch marks is not something one is proud of. I have seen my stretch marks grow from the day I started putting on weight and I'll be honest, even before uploading this photo I thought ‘why would anyone be interested in my concept of stretch marks being decorated with glitter or crystals!’ My god I was so wrong!" - @sarashakeel
Collage artist Sarah Shakeel, is transforming stretch marks into art. Rather than retouching scars or marks, Sarah is highlighting them with glitter and altering our perceptions of these natural markings.
Though Sarah has only just introduced this theme into her work, it is already resonating with her audience. In fact, many women have asked her to transform not just stretch marks, but also wrinkles and scars. By subverting these body stigmas, Sarah is shifting the narrative to create work that liberates and empowers the female form, just as it is.
Tint Fam: We all have worries and fears about our bodies - it's part of the human experience. But -- how many of these insecurities are natural thoughts vs stigmas that society has stated are flaws we should fear, in order to market products which can ‘fix’ us?
All in all, we need to change the discourse and remember not to let these insecurities get the best of us because they aren’t flaws and do not define who we are, as a whole - they are parts of our stories. Let's celebrate our vessels and jumpstart this conversation in the comment section. Tell us the stories of your scars. It's high time we own our marks. After all, they all tell a story. ✨
